In 2023, Cacao-Trace continued its inspiring journey towards crafting sustainable cocoa and empowering farmer communities. The programme delivered incredible results across its core pillars: improving farmer livelihoods, creating better environmental outcomes, and producing exceptional chocolate with a purpose.

Supporting cocoa farmers

Cacao-Trace reached 23,247 farmer families globally, spanning regions like Côte d'Ivoire, Mexico, Vietnam, and Papua New Guinea. A Chocolate Bonus of €2.4 million was distributed, with 17% paid directly to farmers, while 83% was reinvested into community projects such as schools, clean water access, and infrastructure. On top of that, €1.5 million was provided as a Quality Premium for exceptional beans.

Farmers also benefitted from guaranteed purchases of their certified cocoa beans, shielding them from market volatility and ensuring consistent revenue. Programmes like the Child Labour Monitoring and Remediation System (CLMRS) further tackled critical social issues, helping address 314 cases of child labour in 2023.

Environmental impact

Sustainability remained central to Cacao-Trace’s ethos, with 199,302 trees planted in degraded forests in 2023. Agroforestry initiatives are a step towards rebuilding ecosystems while supporting cocoa farming.

Community and education

To foster a brighter future, Cacao-Trace prioritised education in farming communities. In 2023, five schools were built or expanded, alongside sanitation facilities, canteens, and teachers' accommodations. Additionally, nearly 9,750 children received school kits to support their education.

Key Achievements in Numbers:

  • Farmers trained: 70% across the programme.
  • Total cocoa volume: 11,356 metric tonnes in 2023.
  • School projects: 12 initiated, impacting thousands of children.
  • Water equipment installed: 46 systems, providing clean water to communities.

Delivering Great Taste

Cacao-Trace’s focus on fermentation mastery ensures chocolate with unparalleled flavour. With 97% of cocoa beans fermented by trained farmers, the programme consistently delivers chocolate of exceptional quality. Customers and consumers alike can enjoy great-tasting chocolate while knowing they’re contributing to a positive cause.

Cacao-Trace continues to set the standard for sustainable cocoa production. With every bar of chocolate, they’re building a better future for farmers, consumers, and the planet. Together, we can savour the sweet taste of change.
